Art is a great product for 'gifting'. I have made many deals with local real estate offices to use my work as a 'thank-you' to buyers who purchase a home from them. Jewellery stores use my work as 'value added' gifts to avoid discounting. My client becomes the store, not the person buying the jewellery.
The art shows I participate in also attract the type of clients I want: rich and looking for art. The diversity of my images, the variety of colours and sizes I display meet the needs of homeowners and interior designers alike.
Finally selling is about friendships. I get out of my house and into the village to socialise with the local business people all the time. Networking is probably the best way to show people what you do. Don't be afraid to blow your own horn until you run out of 'hot' air. Facebook might be nice for the younger crowd, but my clients just don't fit that scene.
Understanding my clients and what they need is the first step in the business of selling art. It goes without saying you must have the best images to start with. Not the 'been there, done that' look but unique, stylised work. In my area people look at a photograph in a restaurant and say, "That's a Chamberlain". My pieces are finished in size-appropriate, quality frames (expensive). I use Roma and Fotio Italian-made frames exclusively.
I have produced more marketing pieces, brochures, catalogues and postcards of my work now than I ever did when I was a portrait photographer. I'm branding my 'Look' with everything I do. If you are a social photographer and want to add art into your product line, you will need to put a plan together on how you will incorporate fine art photography with your other work. A pricing strategy, balancing it against your other work is critical.
Put together your plan, research your market, design a selling strategy and go sell some art!
