A personal styleLife is full of choices
Style is an identifiable, personalised way of doing things, and as we are dealing with photography, it results from the many different choices a photographer makes in composition, focal length, timing lighting and, above all, opportunity. These are what we have to work with and the choices made depend on the personal tastes. Experimentation results in starting off from a fixed idea, or a well-known style and exploring the possibilities. As you see, it is a way of self-discovery.
One may even develop a style of using a combination of known styles or a process of using known styles at various situations! Many well-known names in history did. Their imagery stood the test of time!
Echoes of my current personal style in my work.
Most of my work involves the creation of a body of images engulfing a concept or a project. Photo essays can be applied to all genres of imagemaking, but in all cases the most important thing is the story-telling. As a demonstration of differing personal styles, I hereby attach an article by a Maltese writer/poet , Glen Calleja, who, together with five other (multicultural) artists joined me on a two-year project exploring life around Maltese kitchens. The project, TKECNIR: Kitchen Narratives, resulted in an exhibition and a publication launched in June 2011, together with a series of short videos.
One of my fellow artists on the project was Gilbert Calleja, a very talented humanistic photographer with whom I am really proud to have worked.
Glen , in this short article, explores the photography involved in the project. His words are investigative and explicit. They describe in detail our varying approaches (or styles) to the project.
For one to understand styles, one has to demonstrate differences between varying styles, and hence this is another point of relevance for the inclusion of this article.
This description has greatly helped me to understand my style further, and opened the door to other concepts; hence my decision to share with you here.
This subject can be developed much much more and this is my intention at The Societies' Convention next January. I invite you all to come forth with questions and talking points.
