Hence Marlene's contribution.

Communication through photography

A meaningful photograph - a successful photograph - does one of several things: it allows, or forces, the viewer to see something that they have looked at several times without really seeing, or it shows them something that they have looked at many times without really seeing, or it shows them something they have never previously encountered. Or it may raise questions - perhaps ones that are ambiguous or unanswerable - that create mysteries, doubts and uncertainties. In other words, it expands our visions and thoughts. It explains our horizons. It evokes awe, wonder, amusement, compassion, horror or any of a thousand responses. It sheds new light on our world, or creates its own world.

Moreover, the most special thing about photography is its inherent realism, that makes the viewer assimilate themselves more closely to the story presented by the image. This is exactly what draws so many people to the medium.

The digital age:

Bringing photographycloser to the people Indeed, as we all know, the advent of digital technology has brough the process of image-making closer to the people by making it more accessible. Very much like Henry Ford's idea when he invented the world's first production line: making the car more accessible to everyone, or rather, as he used to put it, bringing the countryside closer to the people. Today we are experiencing the age when we have cameras on our mobile devices. Everywhere you care to go you are bound to see someone with a camera shooting an image. At wedding ceremonies, the official photographer is on several occasions barraged with rules by the celebrant limiting his movement or prohibiting his use of flash or some other sort of bizarre inhibition, only to realise that during the very same ceremony suddenly everyone points a metallic cigarette-box-looking device and is flashing all over the place.

To add insult to injury, you get people 'stealing' images from your set-up all the time. And let's face it, today's cameras are getting better and better, so the chances that someone else is going to have a decent image are much more realistic. So, what can you do about it?

Pretty much nothing. After all it's a free world. And let's face it...it is fun taking images. We all know this and we will look stupid to deny it.

However, we all know that it is not the equipment that makes the image, but the photographer. Today, even more than ever before, the professional photographer feels the need to put their own personal stamp on their imagery. He/she needs to develop a style.
