Andrew McCarthy FRPS is a wildlife photographer, professional ecologist, photography educator and conservationist with more than 30 years' experience working with the natural world. Through his photography, talks and publications, Andrew aims to showcase the beauty, complexity and fragility of wildlife and habitats, inspiring a deeper appreciation and understanding of the environment.
His photography covers a diverse range of subjects, from insects, fungi and reptiles to birds, mammals and larger wildlife across Africa. Whether photographing overlooked species close to home or iconic wildlife in distant locations, Andrew is drawn to images that tell a story and encourage people to look more closely at the natural world.
Andrew's approach combines his ecological knowledge with a passion for ethical wildlife photography. He believes great wildlife images come from understanding behaviour, respecting the subject and taking time to observe the natural world. His aim is not only to create compelling photographs, but also to encourage conservation and a greater appreciation of the species and habitats around us.
Since 2019, Andrew has represented OM SYSTEM as an official Ambassador, delivering talks, workshops and educational content throughout the UK and internationally. He also provides one-to-one tuition, field workshops and photographic guidance to help photographers improve their skills and gain confidence in wildlife photography.
Andrew currently leads small-group wildlife photography workshops in the UK, develops African photographic safaris in partnership with Wilderness, speaks to camera clubs and photographic societies, and continues to work on his own wildlife photography projects.
For Andrew, wildlife photography is about more than technical excellence. It is about understanding the natural world, working ethically, using light creatively and enjoying the process of discovery. Whether photographing local wildlife or leading a safari in Africa, his goal is to help photographers slow down, observe carefully and create meaningful images while enjoying the experience itself.
