I'm Jonathan, a documentary wedding and portrait photographer based in Newport, working across Cwmbran, Cardiff and the wider South Wales valleys and coast.
I studied photography at degree level, then spent several years teaching art — training that shaped how I actually work today: reading light and composition instinctively, and putting nervous or camera-shy people properly at ease in front of a lens. Before turning to weddings and portraits full-time, I spent years photographing live music in small venues, which taught me to work fast, in difficult light, without ever getting in anyone's way. That habit has stayed with me ever since.
My approach is unposed and observational. Rather than directing a day, I follow it — capturing preparation, ceremony and celebration as they genuinely happen, stepping in only when a group photograph needs a little organising. The same philosophy carries into portrait and commercial work: real moments, not versions of them arranged for the camera.
I've now photographed more than 250 weddings, alongside portrait sessions and commercial work for independent brands and hospitality venues across the region. I edit for longevity rather than trends — natural colour, honest skin tones, and images that will still feel right to look at in ten years' time.
I'm fully insured, hold a live, checkable Enhanced DBS certificate, and I'm proud to be a member of the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers.
