Susan tells us about her image -
''I was on a photography trip with and organised by Jim Harmer from Improve
Photography and some of his readers/ listeners, in late April this year. We went
to Guilin in China for a week with tour guides Andy and Mia who own and operate
Guilin Photography Tours.
On this Wednesday morning we got up at around 0330 and headed out around 0400 to
get rafted down the Li River on motorised bamboo rafts for around an hour. It
was pitch black and we were surrounded by vertical rock faces on both sides. How
we didn’t crash I will never know.
We reached our destination of a little concrete ledge sticking out into the
river around 0500.
We were met by a traditional Chinese Cormorant Fisherman. The fishermen can no
longer catch fish in the Li River due to heavy pollution, so they have adapted
their fishing for tourists and the photography industry. The calm surface of
this stretch of the Li River makes for the most beautiful reflections. The
fisherman, provided an interesting subject to photograph, with the mountains and
sunrise in the background. This image was captured as the sun had started to
come up at 0606am.
Camera – Nikon D800
Lens - 18-135mm DX kit lens @ 18mm (I know, I know!), but actually I used this
lens the most on this trip.
ISO 2500
F4.0
1/100 sec
Shot in RAW
I processed the image using lightroom to bring out the colours of the sunrise
and then used the adjustment brush on the lamp and fisherman’s face. ''
